Thinking of moving to rural Bulgaria - what are the actual pros and cons?

I've been looking at some incredibly cheap properties in the Bulgarian countryside lately and I'm seriously considering a move. While the low cost of living and beautiful nature are huge draws, I'm worried about the reality of living in a remote village. Could anyone share their experiences regarding infrastructure, internet reliability, and the local community for expats? I’d love to hear a balanced view of the advantages and disadvantages before making such a big commitment.

I moved to a village near Veliko Tarnovo 3 years ago. The peace is incredible, but be prepared for the 'village pace.' Everything takes longer, from getting a plumber to getting your mail.

Internet is surprisingly good! Even in remote areas, fiber is becoming more common because Bulgaria has great digital infrastructure. I work remotely for a UK company without any issues.

The local community is very welcoming if you try to learn the language. Don't expect everyone to speak English. A little Bulgarian goes a long way with your neighbors.

Infrastructure is the biggest con. Roads can be terrible, especially in winter. You definitely need a 4x4 if you're planning to live deep in the mountains.

Buying is easy, but maintaining is the challenge. Before you commit, it's worth checking property taxes in Bulgaria explained: what are the annual costs? so you know the yearly financial commitment.

Winter heating is expensive if you rely on electricity. Most villagers use wood burners, which is a lot of physical work—buying, chopping, and stacking wood for months.

The nature is stunning, but remember that 'cheap' often means 'needs a total renovation.' The cost of building materials has gone up significantly in the last two years.

If you're thinking about the long term, look at where are the best places to buy real estate in Bulgaria for investment to ensure your village house holds its value over time.

Healthcare is a major concern. In remote villages, you might be an hour away from a decent hospital. Keep that in mind if you have any chronic health issues or young children.

Water supply can be an issue in summer. Some villages have 'rezhim' (water rationing) when it's very dry. Always ask the neighbors about the water reliability before buying.

The expat community is growing and very supportive. Facebook groups are a lifesaver for finding reliable builders or just meeting up for a beer in the nearest town.

It's a beautiful life if you like gardening and quiet. Just don't expect it to be like Western Europe with a lower price tag; it's a completely different, rugged lifestyle.
