Best places to retire in Bulgaria for expats: Recommendations needed

My partner and I are currently looking into retiring in Bulgaria and are overwhelmed by the number of beautiful locations. We are looking for a balance between a peaceful lifestyle, access to decent healthcare, and a friendly expat community. Do you have any specific recommendations for towns or villages that are particularly welcoming to foreigners? Any advice on the pros and cons of living on the coast versus the mountainous regions would be greatly appreciated.

Veliko Tarnovo is fantastic for retirees. It has a rich history, a great expat community, and excellent medical facilities. Plus, the cost of living is very reasonable compared to the coast.

If you want the coast, look at Varna. It is a proper city, so healthcare is much better than in smaller resort towns. Just be careful with property deals; you should read up on if it is safe to buy real estate in Bulgaria right now before committing.

We retired to Bansko and love it. It is peaceful in the summer and vibrant in the winter. The expat community here is huge and very welcoming to newcomers.

I would suggest Plovdiv. It is the cultural heart of Bulgaria, very walkable, and has a great pace of life. Healthcare access is superior to most small villages.

The coast is beautiful, but it gets very quiet and lonely in the winter months. If you choose the mountains, you get four distinct seasons, but the heating bills in winter can be a shock.

We live in a village near Gabrovo and find the locals very friendly. It is very affordable, but you will definitely need a car to get around easily.
